Add Page Numbers to PDF — Neat Like Print

After merging documents or rearranging pages, the original numbers and the actual order usually no longer match. Fresh numbers let you find the order again even when printouts get shuffled.

Numbers can go in six positions — left, center, or right at the top or bottom — and you can set the start number and range separately, like skipping the cover and starting at 1 on page 2.

Three display formats are offered: number only, "Page 3," and "3 / 20." Formats that include text are drawn on screen and then laid onto the document, so characters don't break.

Limits of this tool

  • It can't erase numbers already printed. If original numbers exist, the two may overlap.
  • Roman numeral (i, ii, iii) formats aren't supported yet.

How to use

  1. 1

    Upload the document

Select the PDF to number. The total page count is shown for reference when setting the range.

  2. 2

    Set position and format

Configure the display position, start number, applied range, display format, font size, and margins.

  3. 3

    Apply and save

Download a new PDF with numbers drawn according to your rules.

Key features

  • Six positions

Combine left/center/right in the header or footer area to match the document's layout.

  • Separate start number and range

You can skip the cover and table of contents and make the first body page "page 1."

  • Total page count

Choosing the "3 / 20" format shows the total length too, handy for spotting missing pages in a printout.

  • Text formats supported

Formats with text like "Page 3" are handled so characters don't break.

When to use it

  • Reports for binding

Add sequential numbers to a document you'll print and bind to keep the order.

  • Renumbering after a merge

Assign a unified new numbering after combining several documents.

  • Distributing meeting material

Makes it easy to point attendees to a spot, like "please see page 12."

How are your files handled?

Numbers are drawn directly onto the document in your browser. The file is never sent anywhere.

Selected files open only in your browser's memory, and results are handed straight to your device when you save. Close the tab and any remaining data is gone with it. See the Privacy Policy and File Retention Policy for details.

Add Page Numbers FAQ

Can I keep numbers off the cover?
Set the applied range to start at page 2 and the start number to 1. The cover stays blank and the body begins at 1.
The numbers overlap the body text.
Try increasing the margin value or moving the position to the opposite side. If the document's own margins are narrow, overlap can happen.
Can I change the number color or font?
For now it uses fixed black and the default font. You can adjust the size, position, and margins.
