PDF to a Word Document — So You Can Rewrite It
Sometimes you need to tweak the content of a PDF you received. If you can't get the original file, the only way is to extract the text from the PDF and turn it back into an editable document.
This tool reads the characters and their coordinates recorded in the PDF to form lines, then splits paragraphs by looking at the gaps and lengths between lines. Text clearly larger than the body is judged to be a heading and given Word's heading style, so you can see the structure in the navigation pane as soon as you open it.
A PDF doesn't store "the paragraph ends here" information. So this is an estimate — use it on the assumption that you'll review and refine the result rather than use it as-is.
Limits of this tool
- The original's page layout, fonts, and margins aren't reproduced. It's rebuilt paragraph by paragraph.
- Tables aren't restored as tables but unpacked into paragraphs. If tables matter, also use PDF → Excel.
- Images, shapes, headers, and footers aren't carried over.
- A PDF that's only a scanned image has no characters and can't be converted (no OCR is provided).
- Documents edited in multiple columns may have their reading order scrambled.

How are your files handled?
